"WALKER" has a tick?

"Walker" is a black labrador-terrier mix. He is primarily an outdoor dog but he does spent the nights in the house. This morning I was petting him and discovered a lump on the end of his ear. Upon closer inspection I came up with a flat bodied little bugger trying to burrow into his ear. It was a brownish colour and way too big to be a flea. My neighbour says its a tick and they are a problem here. What do we do now? We have only recently moved to this area (South East Saskatchewan) and back home we only had to worry about fleas.Today was going to be his Spring cleanup (bath) day. Do I go ahead and shampoo him or should we seek treatment first. And what kind of treatment do we use. Should we be concerned about the cat too?
