Rescued kitten had eye boogers, what does this mean? They were black?

Captured a stray kitten last night and held it in a carrier overnight until the dog warden could pick it up this morning. It had eye boogers at one eye, is this an upper respiratory infection? It was fiesty, very fiesty. Can a kitten overcome an URI on it's own?
