What's the best way to relocate to Fresno?

I am looking to attend graduate school in the fall. I was thinking of moving this summer and renting an apartment for 6 months. If all goes well, I wanted to bring my family out and move to a house or 3br apartment. I have 2 children 8 & 16 with special needs. I hear Clovis is a good area. Please provide advice as to how best to transition such a move. east to west coast.
